The Chinese version of "AmoyMagic
- Guide to Xiamen", a book written by a foreigner,
has just been published.
"Amoy Magic" was a hit and known
to many readers. The author, Dr. Bill Brown, is teaching at
Xiamen University's MBA Center. What's more, he is the first
foreigner in Fujian Province to be granted Permanent
Residence. In 1993, he received the Friendship Award from
premier Li Peng. In 2001, he gained the title of "Honorable
Citizen in Fujian". "Lao Pan" is the nickname many Chinese
call him.
In order to meet readers'
requirements, the Publishing House of Xiamen University
published the second edition of "Amoy Magic" (the
Chinese version) last month. It is a record of Bill
Brown's 15-year-residence in Xiamen, covering many
aspects of Xiamen including history, scenic spots,
culture and countless things of interest to foreigners
living or visiting the area. Both the language and
pictures are vivid and interesting. The content of
this book nearly doubles that of the first edition,
which was published in 2000.
Bill Brown has a deep insight
into things and loves China deeply. He regards "Amoy
Magic" as a book depicting "Lao Nei" (Chinese) by
a "Lao Wai" (foreigner). He has been known to tell
readers who ask for his signature, in Minnan dialect,
"I am a Xiamenese".
The book is being sold at all
Xinhua bookstores in Xiamen.
