Zhouning--awesomely beautiful mountains, valleys, and clouds Holy Carp--this fishy religion has been practiced in Zhouning for 800 years! When holy carp die in Carp village, they're buried in this carp grave Carp are buried in this mass grave when they die. Personally, I prefer carp cremated, with a little sweet 'n sour sauce on the side

Baking breads to feed the holy carp 70 year old granny with bound feet Granny with boundfeet compared with modern girl's big feet! Granny with bound feet meets Big Foot! (Bill Brown) Granny with traditional charcoal-fired hand warmer (very dangerous; they've sent many a village ablaze; today they're being replaced by electric warmers)

The husband-wife tree Zhouning Chinese herb shop Bill Brown wearing handwoven palm fiber raincape and hat Zhouning funeral; mourners wear black to signify deceased was going to "Western Paradise." I asked if that was Vancouver?

Carving ancestral table (they get pretty fancy, with gold and red paint; probably equipped with broadband nethernet connection) Temple shaped a ship, with tree for mast, because some fellow centuries ago lay here and dreamed of a ship of gold. He then collected gold to build this temple on the holy spirit--probably setting aside quite a bit of gold for himself at the same time Carp Village Dream Bow--on the tree in ship temple (wards off evil dreams) Carp village, like everywhere in Fujian, boasted they had the best Southern Shaolin Kung Fu, and happily gave me demonstrations

Bemused onlookers at kung fu masters do their stuff I was no match for Master Zheng and his Kung Fu fork! Ye olde Zhouning village blacksmith Worshipping the tiger killer

Temple for Zhouning's famous ancient tiger killer Zhouning's new and old architecture, side by side Zhouning's west strees is especially picturesque at night Zhouning's beautiful children

Bill and little Zhouning friends Bill thought these kids were playing an ancient Chinese game. It was Gameboy Future mother-in-law in Zhouning's carp village

Every village claims the best pounded pork--as well as the prettiest girls and deadiest kung fu in Fujian, if not in all of China! This entrepreneuring young Zhouning couple has already won national awards for their new tea enterprise. They knew little about tea when they started, but said, "We can learn!" Beautiful lake between Zhouning and Baishuiyang (the 40,000 sq. m. lake where even mortals ike us can walk on water!) Walking on water at Baishuiyang!

A "modern" bridal carriage in the countryside of Baishuiyang, Fujian Zhouning has China's largest waterfalls complex! 700-year-old wooden covered bridge, Fujian (south of Baishuiyang)

Robust Mineral Water company has painted signs on buildings in even the most remote corners of Fujian! Reminded me of "See Rock City!" signs throughout the Southeast U.S. (Painted on barn roofs) This man sweeps the mountains near the falls, top to bottom, every day. He enjoys the job, he said. Peaceful--and good exercise! 9 Dragon Falls, Zhouning--China's largest waterfalls complex

Millionaire¡¯s Row Two stone lions guarded the Zhouning City Bridge. Zhouning is also called the Lion City (Shi Cheng¡ªÊ¨³Ç) because two mountains supposedly resemble lions. It reminded me of Fuzhou¡¯s claim to having a mountain resembling the character ¡°Fu.¡± (¸£). I still think that claim was made by Fu Ling Yu.

The expensive new apartments lining both sides of ¡°Millionaire¡¯s Row¡± (Baiwan Fuyini Jie °ÙÍò¸£Òô½Ö) reminded me of Fuding. Zhouning folk are born entrepreneurs. Fully 30,000 of the 190.000 population work elsewhere¡ªover 20,000 work in the Shanghai Pudong area alone. An official told me, ¡°We Zhouning people are capable, skilled, and know how to use our heads. We saw Pudong¡¯s potential before almost anyone.¡±

The ink was still wet on Pudong¡¯s development plans when Zhouning folk flocked to Shanghai. They got a toehold, then a foothold, and then invited their family and friends to help them get a stranglehold. And the money has flowed back into new homes in their ancestral hometown¡¯s Millionaire¡¯s Row. But as my friend said, ¡°Alas, they¡¯re all too busy getting rich to live here!¡±
An enterprising Zhouning couple that does live at home is the 24 and 25 year olds who started MinDong¡¯s most unique tea factory.

Mr. Wu Chao Yang £¨Îâ³±Ñô£© and Miss Chi Hong Ying (³ØºìÓ¢) began business blissfully ignorant about tea. All they knew is that tea is made by drowning defenseless tea leaves in boiling water. But they sought university experts¡¯ advice, imported cutting edge Taiwanese technology, and now they are the #1 tea producers in all of Mindong¡ªno mean feat, given that Mindong is Fujian¡¯s top tea producer.

Today, research students flock to Zhouning to study the firm, and in 2000 they received two national awards, including the prestigious Beijing 2000 Tea Research Gold Award. Their highland green tea is prized nationwide, especially up north in Harbin and Beijing. ¡°Our tea is the best because of the high altitude, clean air, and pure water.¡±
¡°Really?¡± I said. ¡°That¡¯s the recipe for pretty girls.¡±
¡°Then there must be something to it¡± he said.
